Ideal flatmates

Happy to live with anyone

Description

I am a personable individual, self-sufficient, well organised, empathetic, open-minded, communicative, flexible and readily able to listen and compromise, clean and tidy, work well in a team, able to cook for myself and take responsibility for cleaning and the usual household duties. I am a good listener and accept that perspectives and ideas quite rightly are not restricted by gender and age.

I have a background in technology. Looking to change career paths, I graduated with a degree in psychology in 2020, intending to go on and complete a Cambridge University certificate in teaching English language to foreign speaking adults (CELTA).

Unfortunately, as we all recall this was the time of the pandemic. As a result the whole language school related industry was hard pressed to stay in business, international arrivals being so limited by travel restrictions.

With a previous background in horticulture I returned to working in amenity horitculture for two years, waiting upon the Canterbury tertiary provider, Ara, to once again begin running the CELTA course I wished to complete.

In November 2022 I started the CELTA course at Ara, only to have to pullout because of a COVD19 infection. One year later, I returned to successfully complete the course, graduating in February 2024. Sadly, while course tutors had emphasised the value of this qualification, in terms of employability in the international marketplace, post-pandemic everything had changed. Two years experience teaching in now considered a minimum for teaching English to foreign speakers.

To gain work experience I volunteered with a couple of charities during 2024 - English Language Partners New Zealand and the Howard League for Penal Reform. The former, as a home tutuor for migrants and refugees; then, co-teaching a class of 18. The later was at the Christchurch Mens Prison. To help make myself feel useful I regularly donated plasma at the New Zealand Blood Service centre in Lester Place, Addington which I continue to do.

November 2024, I contacted Literacy Aotearoa who were offering a recognised tertiary qualification in the tertiary teaching space - New Zealand Certificate Adult Tertiary Teaching. This is an opportunity to pivot in the marketplace, and focus upon teaching in broader terms. I am halfway through this course and hope to complete it in late August 2025.
